Algonquin Township | Many residents face challenges in covering rent, mortgage payments, and utility bills such as ComEd and Nicor. Fellowship Housing is a two-year transitional housing program dedicated exclusively to supporting single mothers. Located in the Northwest Suburbs, including Hoffman Estates, Elgin, Carol Stream, and Crystal Lake, the program provides safe housing and equips moms with tools for financial independence and stability. Moms accepted into the program live in apartments rented by Fellowship Housing and are responsible for paying half the rent. The program emphasizes financial management, requiring participants to work closely with a family advocate to follow a strict budget, save, and repay debt. Monthly electronic budget submissions, along with bank statements and receipts, are mandatory. Eligibility requires full-time employment, with an estimated post-tax income of $1,700– $2,100 depending on family size. Unfortunately, unemployment and disability income are not considered eligible sources of income, and emergency assistance is not available. This homeownership program empowers families to create a new future through the stability and security of owning a home. Habitat homes are not given away but are sold to qualified families who commit to making a down payment, contributing sweat equity through labor, and maintaining monthly mortgage payments. McHenry County Lead Based Program provides grant funding to assist with the identification and mitigation of lead-based paint hazards in homes located in McHenry County that were built before 1978. To qualify, homes must have children under the age of 6 living in or regularly visiting the residence and meet low-to-moderate income guidelines. During Community Days, a program representative will be on-site to share information about the dangers of lead exposure, eligibility requirements, and how to apply for grant funding to test for and address lead hazards. This resource is especially valuable for families with young children, and the vendor hopes to be placed near others serving similar populations. Nunda Township provides assistance to residents of Nunda Township, with the option to refer individuals to other organizations for additional support. Saint Vincent de Paul helps residents of Crystal Lake by providing assistance for rent, bills, insurance, food cards, gas cards, clothing cards, medical bills, and other miscellaneous expenses. Assistance is provided directly to vendors, as no cash is given. Home visitations are offered. Additionally, the organization offers prayer and can provide information and referrals to other agencies. Salvation Army provides safe housing, food, and both spiritual and practical support to individuals and families facing homelessness. Their Homelessness Prevention & Emergency Assistance Programs help with mortgage/rent, utility bills, clothing, medication bills, and other essential needs to keep families in their homes. For McHenry County residents, the Salvation Army offers up to 18 months of rent and utility assistance to help prevent eviction. Willow Crystal Lake is the host sight for the Community Resource Center and provides laundry services, haircuts, clothing, showers with toiletries, bikes and bike repair instruction, and furniture moving every Friday of the month (except when there is a 5th Friday or holiday weekend). Veteran & Homeless Services
Compassion for Campers is a ministry of the Tree of Life Unitarian Congregation in McHenry. This ministry is financially supported by the Faith Leaders of McHenry County and other churches and individuals. Pioneer Center Coordinated Entry for McHenry County ensures that all individuals facing a housing crisis have fair and equal access to services. This system identifies, assesses, refers, and connects individuals to housing and assistance based on their unique strengths and needs, with a focus on prioritizing the most vulnerable. The system is required for HUD-funded projects. Key services include:
- PADS – The largest shelter in McHenry County, offering temporary shelter for men, women, and children. Turning Point is McHenry County’s only domestic violence agency, providing free services to all residents in English and Spanish. Veterans Path to Hope operates New Horizons, a 20-bed transitional living shelter in Hebron, IL, for homeless veterans needing more intensive support to reintegrate into stable housing. The program offers various services, including employment assistance, recovery support, transportation to work, and daily living skills. In addition, the Crystal Lake drop-in center serves as a resource for veterans and their families. The center is staffed by veteran peer support specialists and offers support, information, referrals, and a safe space to connect with peers and a food pantry for veterans, monthly food trucks, and counseling support. The SSVF program, funded by the VA, helps low-income veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, offering rapid rehousing and support. New Directions “A Way Out Program” offers McHenry County residents a judgment-free path to recovery from substance or alcohol use disorder. Transportation
The Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) Mobility Management Division works to increase awareness and independence by connecting older adults and individuals with disabilities to information about Metra, Pace, CTA buses and trains, RTA programs, and local transit options in the RTA region, which includes Cook, DuPage, Lake, Kane, McHenry, and Will Counties. The Ride to Recovery program offers dedicated transportation in partnership with Specialty Courts, the McHenry County Division of Transportation, and Independence Health & Therapy. Designed to assist individuals involved with Specialty Courts, the service features scheduled routes connecting key locations in McHenry County, including the Woodstock Metra, McHenry County Courthouse, McHenry Metra, Crystal Lake Metra, Marengo McDonald’s, and Harvard Metra.
