Serving a Diverse Community Well
The Vision of Culturally Responsive Foods
In 2022, the Care Center began to see a drastic increase in new guests, many who were refugees or immigrants from Venezuela and Ukraine. This influx resulted in an increasing awareness of the disparity between the selection of products offered in the Food Store and the large number of Hispanic, Latinx and Eastern European guests.
In response to this gap, the Care Center introduced an increased selection of cultural and ethnic foods, known as Culturally Responsive Foods. These are safe and nutritious foods that meet the diverse tastes and needs of customers based on their cultural identity. These types of foods include:
- Flavors and Seasonings
- Different kinds of rice
- Beans
- Oils
- Sugar
- Masa Flour
The response has been incredible. When a young boy saw the display of food, he exclaimed to his mom, “Look, they’ve got our food!” Our goal is to expand the selection of foods available and offer a sense of familiarity, comfort, and belonging for our guests as they tangibly experience the love of God.

Heritage Month Celebrations
Throughout the year, the Care Center takes time to honor and celebrate different cultures in conjunction with national heritage months, including Black History Month, Asian American and Pacific Islander Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, and more. These heritage month celebrations often include featured music, food samples, crafts and activities for kids, and offering a selection of culturally responsive foods that reflect and honor that culture.
To help stock the Food Store with these culturally responsive foods, we invite you to shop our Amazon Wish List for the month.
